Overall Evaluation
This unit was a exam unit, meaning we was given eight different topics that we could choose from to focus this unit on, the topics were:
- Contact Sheets
- Challenging Traditional Representations
- Aspects of Landscapes
- Unusual Portraiture
- Viewpoint & Composition
- Multiple Images
- Documenting In Colour
- New Realities
I decided to look further into the following topics:
- Viewpoint & composition
- Multiple Imagery
- Documenting In Colour
I then created three mind maps, one for each topic. The mind maps included photographers that related to the specific topics, shoot ideas & ways in which I could portray the topic through the use of photography. I then had to decided from the three topics which one I would choose. As I was most interested in 'Documenting in Colour' & had the most ideas and understanding of this topic I decided to choose it for this unit. I also chose this topic as from looking back on my unit3 work I have found that majority of my work portrays vibrant colours and I am mostly interested in extremely colourful photography, therefore this topic was perfect for me. The topic being 'Documenting in Colour' also allowed me to have a very broad approach to the unit which I specifically liked in my previous unit(unit3) as I like to show variety through my work.
In order to gain a deeper understanding of documenting in colour photography I had to make a definition page, this contained 4 annotated pictures, a dictionary definition of documenting in colour & then my own definition. This allowed me to gain knowledge of the area I will be focusing on & give me inspiration. Before doing any shoots for this unit I had to make an image bank of 25 photographs that fit within my topic of documenting in colour, I then had to annotate the photos. This allowed me to look at existing work and gave me ideas for shoots. Research into photographers was a huge part of this unit. I started by making a research log that allowed me to look at 20 different photographers work. I then had to choose 5 photographers from the research log that I was most interested in and then I looked into them further. The 5 photographers included 4 annotated photographs, why I chose the photographer, meow they had influenced my work and an overall summary. By looking at existing photographers work it allowed me to see what styles of work I liked and what I didn't, therefore I could see what ideas I would like to develop and include in my own work.
Throughout the whole of this project I had to complete a work record after each shoot that I did. This included 2 annotated pictures, where the influence for the shoot came from, what went well & what I could improve. This allowed me evaluate my own work so I knew where I had to make improvements and what went well. Therefore I could learn from my mistakes.
When it got towards the end of the project I had to complete 5 connecting essays. This involved connecting my work to others. I had to choose one of my own photographs that I had taken during the unit and connect it to another image from an existing photographer or an image from the internet. Within the connecting essays I had to say how they are similar whether this be the same use of lighting. This allowed me to learn how to connect my work to others.
Throughout the whole of this unit I have completed a number of different print techniques. They are the following:
- Selective Colour
- Framing
- Black & White
- Overlay
- Duotone
- Image & Text
- Repetition
- Multiple Imagery
- Montage
- Soft Focus
- Cluster
- Photo Joiner
- Image Within Image
- Weaving
By doing these techniques it allowed me to develop my editing techniques and my skills with using photoshop as some of the techniques are very complex. This also allowed me to understand which photographs worked best with specific techniques. By completing a variety of different techniques it allowed me to show variety of skills & editing styles throughout my work.
Within the project I have learnt a variety of different skills. I have developed my skills within Photoshop as I have a greater understanding of the editing software. I have also developed my physical skills as I am generally more confident taking photographs as I know what lighting works best and have more knowledge of about. Imposition of photographs. I am also very confident with using the studio and believe it is where some of my best work comes from, I'm confident choosing the right background and setting up different types of lighting.
Towards the end of the project I had to complete a 15 hour exam. This is what the project had been leading up to, all of the shoots in this unit were practise for the exam. I then had to choose 3 or 4 shoots that I had done previously & really liked or a totally new shoot idea. I decided to choose the following:
Towards the end of the project I had to complete a 15 hour exam. This is what the project had been leading up to, all of the shoots in this unit were practise for the exam. I then had to choose 3 or 4 shoots that I had done previously & really liked or a totally new shoot idea. I decided to choose the following:
- Graffiti
- London
- Paint dripping
- Glow Sticks
The first three shoots I had already practised in previous shoots but the glow stick idea came from the use of vibrant colours in the first three shoots that I had done for the exam and I wanted to experiment with the use of glow sticks as I felt the contrast against the black background would be very effective and when looking existing glow stick photography I liked how you could see the movement within the photographs. For each shoot I took as many photographs as I could as I knew I wouldn't be able to take anymore and when it came to the editing process I wanted to have a variety of photographs to choose from. Looking back on the exam I believe it went very well and the end result was the best that it could have been and I am very pleased with my final pieces.
Overall this unit has allowed me to develop my skills further within photography. It has allowed me to become more confident with my own ideas and made me realise you need to experiment with ideas and show variety within your work to make it stand out from others. As the topic I chose for this unit was documenting in colour it allowed me to produce vibrant, colourful photographs which I am most interested in, therefore I was confident that the outcome would be good. I have also realised that taking more photographs when shooting allowed me to have a wide range of photographs to pick from which generally produced a better outcome.
